Solar System and Monitor

Solar Photovoltaic System

Our solar PV system is rated for 22kw dc and provides 100% of the power we need to operate the winery and tasting room for one calendar year.  We utilize net-metering where we send our excess electricity that we generate back onto the grid for others to use. Our electric service provider, NOVEC, credits us for the power we send them and those credits offset our power draw from the grid when it is cloudy or at night.  Our goal each year is to be “net-zero” in using power from the grid.  So far so good!  Be sure to check out our photo album of the solar panel install.

Solar Panel Information

The North Gate Vineyard solar array conists of 96 solar panels manufactured by Fath-Solar located in Germany.  We are one of the first installations of this panel in the USA.  We were attracted to the panel because of its high rated output (230 watts dc) and its ability to fully integrate into the building design.  The panels fit together with a weather tight seal to provide a seamless, sleek look and finish on the roof.  These panels are the finished roofing for this part of the roof.  No need to spend extra money on a finished roofing material and then cover it up with solar panels.

The solar panel model is the FS 230 AP S2 plus.

Inverter Information

In order to convert the DC power we generate to AC for use in the building and on the grid, we utilize inverters from Enphase Energy.  Enphase has microinverter technology which provides one inverter for each panel and they are configured in a bus architecture.  This way, if one inverter goes out, the whole system continues to operate minus the one panel.

We are using the Enphase M215 MicroinverterEnphase M215 Microinverter Datasheet (PDF).

The Enphase M215 is one of the most efficient inverters on the market in a small form-factor.

For serviceability and ease of maintenance, we have installed the inverters directly under the eave of the solar panel roof so they are accesible via a standard height ladder.

Solar System Monitor

The Enphase M215 Microinverters are also “Smart Inverters” which relay telemetry consisting of vital solar system health and performance over the electrical lines of the building.  Enphase provides a special gateway, called the Enphase Envoy, which reads the telemetry off of the electrical lines and sends the data via the internet to Enphase’s Enlighten Portal.  Via the Enphase Energy Enlighten portal, we are able to monitor our solar system down to the individual panel and inverter.

Visit the North Gate Solar Panel Monitor and see the current and historical energy production performance of our solar array!

The solar system monitor also sends alerts via email and text messaging when certain events or situations are encountered on the system.
